The God Worth Celebrating - Part 1

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. [16] For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. [17] He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [18] And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. [19] For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,

Last Sunday I talked about "A Life Worth Celebrating". We looked at Colossians 1:9-14. We noticed that not all lives lived are worth celebrating and we discussed what we must have in our lives for our lives to be worth celebrating. Let me list them to refresh your memory: For your life to be worth celebrating you must:

  • Understand the will of God. It is not what you are to do or not to do, but who and whose you are. When you discover who you are in Christ then everything else will flow out of that.

  • Live a life worthy of the Lord. Does your life glorify God?

  • Seek to please the Lord everyday. You can please the Lord only through faith in Him

  • Live life that is evident by the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22

  • Keep growing in the knowledge of God. Do not rely on your past experience with God. Seek to know Him more and more everyday.

  • Be patient and steady during life trials and difficult times. Do not panic during difficult times remain focus on the Lord and do not give up.

  • Be thankful in all things. Whatever you face always give thanks to God. Today, I want us to talk to you on "The God Worth Celebrating - Jesus Christ". How many of you believe that our Jesus Christ is worth celebrating? I know that all of us believe that He is worth celebrating. But if somebody asks you why is it that Jesus Christ is the only one worth celebrating? Then you must be able to provide an answer. The answer to this important question is found in the passage we are going to discuss this morning. Turn to Colossians 1:15-23.

The reasons our Jesus Christ is worth celebrating are many but I enumerated few of those reasons here today and you can add to the list. Our Christ is worth celebrating because:

1. He is God.

V. 15 "He is the image of the invisible God.." The coming of Christ in the flesh has made it possible for man to see God. Jesus Christ is fully God. He is the image of God. When you know what Christ is like then you will know what God is like. How can you know Christ today? By knowing His character. Do you know the character of Jesus Christ? Many people are being cheated today by the so called preacher who are taking advantage of the people's ignorance of God to create a God people want rather than a God that is. There is a different between the God who is and the God people want. As people we want a God we can manipulate, a God we can twist His arm to do our will rather than we doing His will. But when you come to know that character of Jesus Christ, nobody can manipulate you with fear, or vision, or doctrines of demons. When you know the character of Jesus and you pattern your life after His character then you too become the image of God. Remember you were created in the image of God originally. Now Jesus came down in human form to teach us how we can live like the true image of God. You can celebrate Jehovah because you can know Him.

2. He is the designer of all things.

V. 16 :For by Him all things were created....All things were created through Him and for Him" This is a very simple but yet astounding truth. Jesus Christ created all things including you, your son your daughter, your husband, your wife. If He is the one that created all things, then He is the only one that can fix all things. Therefore stop struggling about your son, stop struggling about your daughter, stop struggling about your husband or wife as the case may be. Just call on Jesus Christ the creator of all things and He will fix them. Remember His goal is to make all of us look like Him. That plan of His has not changed. Christ is in the business of saving and changing lives. Stop struggling about your self-image. Christ created you and He has a plan for your life and His plan will come to pass no matter what. Guess what He created all things for Himself. This fact makes me special. I am created by Christ for Christ. Therefore why should I continue to beat myself in the head about the things that other people are saying? You see, I am created by Christ for Christ. I may not know how to do things like you do but the fact remains the same I am created by Christ and for Christ. I may not be as rich and famous as you are but the fact remains the same, I am created by Christ and for Christ. I may not be as strong as I want to be today, but the fact remains the same, I am created by Christ and for Christ. Why do you want me to be like you? I am not created for you but I am created by Christ for Christ. If you believe this fact that you are created by Christ for Christ then are you living a daily life that glorifies God? Do you begin each day desiring to live it for Christ's glory alone? Paul wrote to the Philippians, Christ be magnified in my body, whether it be life, or death" (Phil. 1:20). What or who is first in your life? Husband, Wife, job, sports, church, boyfriend, girlfriend, parents, etc? Because He is the designer of all things he has authority over all things. He has authority over thrones, dominions, principalities or powers. Demons have no right to torment you or your loved ones. Jesus Christ has authority over them. Since Christ is in you, then you too have authority over demonic forces that try to attack you. Use your authority in Christ and rebuke the demons in the name of Jesus. Do not live a life that is full of fear any more, do not let Satan intimidate you any longer. You have the power to rebuke and cast him out of your life and circumstances.

3. He is the sustainer of all things.

Christ not only created us, He sustains us. V. 17 "And He is before all things and in Him all things consist". In Him all things hold together. He holds all things together and continues to hold them together and apart from Him all things would fall apart. You can see all around the world where Jesus Christ is not given the proper place in their society, it is always a chaotic place. A life that does not recognize Christ as the sustainer of all things will crumble at last. Japan has been going on without the knowledge of Christ but lately their economy crumble and more churches are springing up in Japan daily. When I discover the truth that Jesus Christ sustains all things including my life, my wife's life, my children's lives, I stop worrying and I start trusting on the one who sustains all things. Because He sustains all things, I carry all my problems to Him, for He knows how to solve them. What about you? Whom do you do to with your problems? Many trust in their government to sustain them, many trust in their job to sustain them. The bible says "Some may trust in horses and some in chariots but we will trust in the name of he Lord our God." Psalm 20:7. The fact that Jesus Christ possess all these qualities and yet He stoop down to save me makes it very imperative for me to celebrate Him! What about you? Rise up and give Him a standing ovation as loud as you can give Him this morning.

4. He is the head of the church.

V. 18 "And He is the head of the body, the church...that in all things He may have preeminence." The head is the control center of the body. The head gives direction to the body. Apart from the head the body is dead. When we became believers, we became part of Christ's body through the baptizing work of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13). As members of his body we are totally dependent upon the head, Christ, for direction. He is to control us. Jesus Christ became the head of the church when He resurrected from death and became the firstborn from among the dead. He is the first in rank and position. He must therefore be the Lord of all or He is not Lord at all. There is no room for competing gods in my life. Jesus Christ must have preeminence or first -place in everything. He must have first-place in our families, first-place in our marriages, first-place in our professions, first-place in our ministry and missions, first-place in our conversation, first-place in our pleasures, first-place in our music, first-place in what we watch on television or at the movie theater, first-place in our worship, etc. I ask you in the presence of God the most high who sees all things and knows all things: As far as you know, is Jesus Christ first in your life? I encourage you today let us give Him first-place!

5. All God's fullness dwells in Him.

V.19 "For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness of should dwell.." The word fullness means completeness, or totality. All the totality of God dwells in Him. He is not just a prophet, he is not just a good man, he is not just one of the great messengers of God, He is God! He has all the fullness of God in Him. Christ has always been God and He will always be God. He who denied this truth is not saved. He who does not believe this fact is not a Christian. That is why Christianity is different from all other religions. Other religions are based upon dome tenets and principles, but Christianity is based upon Jesus Christ. While other religions cannot boast of the confidence of salvation while they are still alive, Christians can boast of the fact that they are saved and will be saved when they get to heaven. You see when we have Christ we have all of God in us. The problem we have as Christians is not having more of God, but allowing God to have more of us. Are you willing to surrender absolutely to Jesus Christ and let Him be your Lord and Savior? Since all the fullness of God dwells in Jesus Christ, we need not to look to any other person for the answers to our problems but to Jesus Christ alone. The totality of God's blessings and richness dwells in Christ, so we need to rely totally on Him for He cares for us. He will not let us down. He says, "Call on Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things you know nothing about". Jer.33: 3. Are you ready to call on Him today?
